Point and Line Installation Art
Project Description
When brainstorming ideas for this piece...I was obsessed with the idea of using a portal from another world. An idea that worked well with the concept of dimensionality and was a good way for me to exhibit the main considerations that we were looking for when making this plate: alteration of space, instability, change in size, and a change in feeling. All of which, if done right, would be altered by creating a portal to another world. The next part of my process was centered around finding a good concept that worked well with the idea, all the while considering how points and lines could be incorporated into the piece. This had me thinking of the possibility of introducing an other worldly being into the work as it could create a connection between the current space and the other dimension. Chainsaw man was a good inspiration for this as it introduced the idea of using devils, other worldly creatures that were based on ones fears and anxieties, and use one or something similar as a key concept for the artwork. Yokai’s or Japan’s version of supernatural beings was also a topic that I wanted to explore since they depict creatures that can traverse both the physical and spiritual world, something that I can easily connect with in the idea of creating an artificial portal.
This led me to the discovery of one of Japan’s oldest artwork: Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s depiction of “Takiyasha-hime Summoning a Skeleton at the Haunted Old Palace at Sōma”. An old color woodblock print of the Edo Period depicting the tale of Princess Takiyasha as she summons a skeleton specter in order to frighten Oya Taro Mitsukuni at her father’s ruined mansion in Soma. The piece talks about how the princess has used an other worldly creature in order to seek revenge over the man that killed and ended his father’s reign. What I mainly found distinct about the piece was its depiction of an empty void and how the specter bends the images space similar to how a portal opens up to another world. When recreating this image for my work I used yarn attached to the walls of my apartment as a way of distorting the space similar to what the print depicts as the creature rips down the mansion’s walls. Line work has also been heavily used to create the illusion that the yarn has somehow changed the apartment's dimensions. I’ve also recreated the black void by covering the walls with black cartolina placing it next to the yarn installation making it feel like the space has been altered and deformed. Lastly, I used illustration boards and markers to recreate some parts of the specter making it look like it’s emerging from my apartment window. Through stippling I created patterns around the bones making its shape more distinct, utilizing point and line to create its final image.
